قصة حياة عازف الطنبور المغرور المتكبر الحزينة الكسيرة التي أمضاها بخطوات خاطئة، "عزيز بك" المنغمس في نشوة ملذات الشباب، من دون أن يخطر بباله أن يكون له عمل أو وظيفة، يقع في حب الفتاة الإرمينية مريم؛ لكن عائلة مريم؛ لكن عائلة مريم الفقيرة تهاجر إلى بيروت لتأمين لقمة العيش فيسافر "عزيز بك" إلى بيروت لاحقاً بحبيبته.
ويجد الخيبة هناك في إنتظاره حيث يدرك أن حبيبته التي يحبها حتى العبادة كونت لنفسها حياة جديدة في بيروت، ويفهم أن حبه لا يلقى أي تجاوب، ولم يكن لديه غير طنبوره يتمسك به للبقاء على قيد الحياة، فيعمل عازف طنبور في حانات بيروت الصغيرة، ويبرع في ذلك.
يعود "عزيز بك" إلى إسطنبول ويعيش فيها كسير القلب لفشله في حبه، ومع مرور الوقت يكتسب شهرة "كعازف"، فينتقل من الحانات الصغيرة إلى الملاهي والنوادي الكبرى وتتغير الأزمنة ويبدأ اناس إسطنبول الجدد بالعزوف عن سماع الألحان الشجية المؤثرة في النفس التي يعزفها عازف طنبور ماهر، ويرغبون الإستمتاع بسماع الموسيقى الحديثة، وهكذا تفتح صفحةً جديدة في حياة "عزيز بك" وتجلب له هذه الصفحة إنكسارات جديدة وأحزان جديدة.
