في هذا الكتاب حاولت ترتيب ما كان في حياتي وحياة جيلي في فترتي الطفولة والشباب الأولى، السبعينيات، من أشياء تافهة وعادية وغير لافتة وبسيطة. مع تذكري تلك السنوات، رأيت أنها أكثر من عقد ذي معنى لدى جيلنا، بل هو عقد آخر محمل بمعان مختلفة نقلنا إلى عقد آخر، وأثناء ذلك كبرنا. لا أدري إن كان كبرنا، أم تلك البراءة العجيبة ما يعصر قلبي. يمكن للآخرين أن يسموا عقد جيلنا أسماء مختلفة، ولكنني أريد أن أسميه "مرحلة الحرص". إنها السنوات التي كان يطفأ فيها أحد مصباحين منارين، ويستخدم فيها قلم الرصاص حتى يغدو بطول شعيرة..
ذاكرتي فقط كانت مصدر هذا الكتاب. أحياناً سألت أصدقائي عما كنت غير واثقة بصحته.
..إذا كنت قد استخدمت "الماضي المرئي" في كتابتي، فلأن ما كتبته خرج من حياتي، ولكن بعض ما عرضته ما زال حياً، ولست واثقة بأنه سيكون موجوداً غداً.
