على الرغم مما يشير إليه عنوان الرواية "كوابيس هلسنكي" إلى عاصمة دولة أوربية هي فلندا، إلا أن أحدائها ترتبط بالعنف والارهاب في العراق وهموم شخوصها العراقيين ومعاناتهم مع عسف النظام الديكتاتوري السابق في ذلك البلد وبقدر ما حاولت الرواية أن تعكس تفاصيلاً عراقية شفافة لكنها تبدو في جوانب منها مفزعة في حقائقها، من هنا جاء عنوان الكوابيس التي يعيشها الإنسان العراقي في حياته اليومية. الرواية تتناول أيضاً حياة وأفكار الجماعات المتأسلمة المتطرفة المقيمة في أوربا، وتحديداً فنلندا التي تغذي وتساند العنف الطائفي في العراق وخطط ومخاطر هذه الجماعات على الحياة الديمقراطية في أوربا. وفي هذا الفضاء الروائي حاول الكاتب استعارة شيء من حرفيات السينما وعمل على خلط الواقع بالخيال والأحلام بالوثائق بقصد استقراء موضوعة العنف وهويته وجذوره ومخاطره، والتحذير من التطرف محاولاً القول: أن العنف يمكن أن يندلع في أي مكان لأسباب لا علاقة لها بالدين فقط.
