في هذه الأثناء استعادت أمي بعضاً من قوتها ووعيها وتوجهت إلي بسؤال فحواه، سمعت أن لك ابناً لماذا لم تأتي به إلينا؟ ابني شيء من الماضي، وأشياء الماضي لا تعني لي شيئاً، لا تعني لي شيئاً ذا أهمية، فأشياء الماضي تبقى للماضي إضافة إلى أن ابني ولد جراء علاقة طارئة. لكنه ابنك، قال والدي. لا يهم إن كان ابني، فالمهم الآن أن نغير أثاث البيت، أن نتخلص منه وتحديداً من هذه الخزانة العتيقة. هذه الخزانة تبقى في هذا البيت ملكاً لابنك الذي سيعود يوماً يسأل عن والده، عن ماضيه وفي هذه الخزانة سيضع ابنك صوره وأشياءه الخاصة إلى جانب صورك وأشياءك الخاصة التي احتفظنا بها منذ أن أصبح لك صور وأشياء خاصة. صحت بحدة: ليس عندي صور وأشياء خاصة وأيضاً لا أريد أن يكون لابني صور وأشياء خاصة. إنه الجنون، إنه الجنون بعينه قالت أني ووالدي بصوت واحد، وبصوت واحد قالا لي: اختر بين أمرين، بقائك أو بقاء الخزانة. كانت التفاتة شزرة مني إلى الخزانة مصحوبة بتمتمات خفية مني، سأوصي ابني ألا يضع صوره بداخلها.
