في مجموعته القصصية "كوخ الشيطان" يرصد على سرور طبيعة العلاقة بين من يفترض أنه المواطن والدولة بنسختها العربية، ويقاربها بأسلوب روائي يختلط فيه الحياتي بالحكائي، والواقعي بالأسطوري، والمألوف بالغرائبي، وبنتيجة هذا الرصد والمقاربة يهرب على طريقة الرومنطقيين الجبرانيين إلى الطبيعة التي لمَا تزل محفورة في ذهنه منذ الطفولة، وهي ما تفرض نفسها في مجمل العمل القصصي، التي نعثر فيها على بيت الجد العتيق، وعلى الحقول والحدائق والبراري التي طالما عبث فيها طفلاً وعاشقاً.
وفي هذا العمل يظهر الكاتب وكأنه في حالة بحث عن وطن يجد فيه سعادته مع المرأة التي يحبَ، سواء أكانت زوجة أم صديقة، ليعيشا معاً خارج قيود المجتمع والأعراف والتقاليد. هو كاتب يرى في المرأة فرحها "... وحتى في صمتها تعبر ملائكتي غريب" يذهب بخياله بعيداً ويدخل عالم المرأة عبر قص جميل "دون أسئلة أو استفسارات، ليرسم عالمه الخاص والذي في كثير من الأحيان هو بعيد عن الواقع، ولكنه لا ينفك يبحث عن المرأة المثال والتي غالباً نا يرتبط حضورها بجمال الوجود فتبقى هدف الرجل الذي لا يبرح يطاردها حتى يكتمل معنى حياته، وهنا تبدو براعة الكاتب حين يضع أمام هذا الرجل، عبر أسلوب رمزي، عقبات كثيرة تحول دون حصوله على المرأة بيسر، فيسعى وراءها "بين الغيوم وعلى لاالشواطئ وبين البراري، كنحلة يتعب ويلهث خلفها الدبور" وفق تعبيره. "كوخ الشيطان" عمل قصصي يقترب من لغة النثر بدا فيه علي سرور كحالم لا رقيب على مناماته...
