عينا المرأة بئران مظلمان يدخل فيهما كل شيء ولا يخرج شيء. عينا المرأة تمتصان وتشفطان وتبتلعان ما تنظران اليه. لا تعبران عن خوف ولا أمل ولا فرح ولا حزن، فقط تنظران والمنظر الذي تنظرانه يغور فيهما.
على الطرف الآخر من الوهدة، على سفح التل الذي تنظر اليه المرأة الجالسة القرفصاء، هناك قطعة أرض عارية مثل شق جرح لم تغطه بعض القشرة. أسندت ذراعها على الأرض وبحركة رشيقة بشكل مدهش انتصبت على قدميها. بقيت ثوان جامدة تنظر الى الأمام. على الجانب الآخر من الوهدة جندي يصوب عليها بندقيته. جندي آخر يصيح بمكبر الصوت: "منطقة عسكرية مغلقة، خطوة أخرى وسنطلق النار". تظهر صورتها، أحمر عقيق عباءتها وأبيض منديلها بتخريجته الزرقاء السماوية الذي ينسدل على ظهرها، وتختفي في منظار القناص.
يدمدم الجندي المولود في بروكلين ولا يعرف أشياء كثيرة عن الريف سائلاً زميله: لكن، بحق الشيطان ما الذي تفعله؟ فيقول الجندي الآخر: أعتقد أنها تقتلع الأعشاب الضارة الموجودة حول الأشجار
