كانت أستراليا شريكاً في كل الحروب الغربية على الأراضي العربية، منذ كانت مستعمرة بريطانية، وقد أسهمت بجهودها الدبلوماسية في إنشاء إسرائيل عام 1948، واعترفت بها اعترافا قانونياً فور إنشائها. وقد تعددت أشكال الدعم الدبلوماسي الأسترالي لإسرائيل في الأمم المتحدة وخارجها، بمنع أي قرار يدين جرائم الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، والضغط على الدول الآسيوية للاعتراف بإسرائيل والتصويت لمصالحها، والضغط على السفراء العرب لديها للتطبيع مع إسرائيل. وتنوعت علاقات أستراليا بإسرائيل في المجالات الاستخبارية والأمنية، والعسكرية، والاقتصادية، والتكنولوجية، وشجعت أستراليا إعادة تصدير المنتجات الإسرائيلية إلى الدول العربية والآسيوية. ويتفاخر المسؤولون الأستراليون من الحزب الحاكم بأن بلدهم أكثر تأييداً لإسرائيل من الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. ويُقابَل ذلك باستياء من الكثير من الهيئات والأفراد الأستراليين، والبرلمانيين، بل من بعض الوزراء، ممن يطالبون بتبني بلادهم سياسة شرق أوسطية معتدلة. ويرجع الانحياز الأسترالي إلى إسرائيل إلى عوامل تاريخية ودينية وعنصرية، إضافة إلى دعم إسرائيل واللوبي الإسرائيلي في أستراليا بشكل مباشر أو غير مباشر للحملات الانتخابية للحزبين الأستراليين الرئيسيين: العمال والأحرار؛ لضمان انتهاج كل من الحكومة والمعارضة سياسة مؤيدة لإسرائيل. وبرغم تنامي العلاقات الأسترالية مع الكثير من الدول العربية فإن ذلك لم يؤثر بالإيجاب في سياسة أستراليا الشرق أوسطية، بل ازدادت انحيازاً إلى إسرائيل، وعدوانية تجاه العرب في أستراليا وخارجها؛ ويرجع ذلك إلى غياب الضغط السياسي العربي، والفصل بين المصالح التجارية والعلاقات السياسية، والافتقار إلى لوبي عربي فعال في أستراليا.
