تعتبر قضية النزاعات الحدودية من أخطر القضايا التي كانت سبباً في نشوء العديد من المنازعات الإقليمية والتي أدت في بعض الأحيان إلى قيام حروب. وتعتبر التسوية السلمية لمنازعات الحدود والمنازعات الإقليمية ضرورة، ليس فقط بسبب ما قد يمثله بقاء هذا النوع من المنازعات دون حل من خطورة تهدد علاقات حسن الجوار بين الدول، وإنما أيضاً لأن استمرار بقاء هذه المنازعات قد يؤدي مع مرور الوقت إلى بروز مشكلات قانونية معقدة يمكن أن تتسبب في إحداث المزيد من التدهور في العلاقات بين الدول المعنية. وتلقي الدراسة بعض الضوء على مدى ملاءمة الدور الذي تضطلع به الوسائل السلمية المختلفة لتسوية منازعات الحدود والمنازعات الإقليمية، وذلك من خلال ما تكشف عنه خبرة العمل الدولي والعربي المعاصر، وبصرف النظر عن الوسيلة التي يمكن للدول المتنازعة أن تلجأ إليها لتسوية ما قد يثور بينها من منازعات بشأن الحدود أو بشأن ادعاءات السيادة المتعارضة، فإن هذه الدول تستطيع أن تقلل من خطورة هذه المنازعات، بل وقد تنجح في إنهائها تماماً إذا ما قدر لها أن تستوعب حقائق العصر الذي نعيشه، والتي تشجع التعاون المتبادل القائم على مبدأ حسن الجوار وعلى النظر إلى الحدود السياسية على أنها بالأساس خطوة للاتصال والتفاعل وتبادل المنافع.
