تستعرض هذه المحاضرة عمليات السلام التي تتم بإشراف وإدارة الأمم المتحدة، والتي تأخذ أشكالاً متعددة منها حفظ السلام وبناء السلام وصنع السلام، ويتم تحديد نوع المهمة بقرار من مجلس الأمن الدولي بناء على معطيات واعتبارات موضوعية أهمها حيوية المشكلة بالنسبة إلى السلم العالمي ومصالح القوى العظمى وتوافر الإرادة السياسية لأعضاء مجلس الأمن الدولي. وقد شاركت القوات المسلحة الأردنية في قوات حفظ السلام في العديد من المواقع منذ عام 1989، وقد بلغ عدد الأفراد المشاركين حوالي 19 ألف مشارك من القوات المسلحة، بالإضافة إلى مشاركة قوات من الأمن العام الأردني، وتنبع المشاركة الأردنية من الاهتمام بالأمن والسلم الدوليين، وأن هذا الأمر ليس مهمة الأمم المتحدة وحدها فقط، وتؤدي المشاركة في هذه المهمات إلى زيادة كفاءة وجاهزية القوات المسلحة الأردنية، بالإضافة إلى النظر إليها على أنها مسؤولية أخلاقية وعمل إيجابي ينبغي القيام به.
