ارتبط تاريخ المجتمعات البشرية بتدفقات الهجرة عبر الفتوحات وتكوين الدول والاستعمار، وقد أحدث كل هذا شبكات هجرة تطورت على إيقاع التحولات الظرفية. وأدى ذلك إلى "عولمة الهجرات" وازدياد عدد الدول الموفدة والمستقبلة ودول العبور ليتعدى عدد المهاجرين في العالم 200 مليون شخص، أي حوالي 3% من سكان العالم. وتشكل البلدان العربية مجالاً لحركات الهجرة. ومع تكون جاليات مهمة في حجمها (سواء بصيغة قانونية أو غير قانونية)، أصبحت هذه تشكل مكوناً أساسياً في العلاقات بين الدول المستقبلة والدول الموفدة، وبخاصة بعد أن تحول مشروع الهجرة بالنسبة للسواد الأعظم من المهاجرين من مشروع مؤقت إلى إقامة دائمة. تعرضت المحاضرة لعدد من القضايا الرئيسية، أبرزها: البعد التاريخي وتقويم حجم الهجرة وأنواعها مع التركيز على الهجرة غير الشرعية وهجرة الكفاءات. وأسباب وحوافز الهجرة الداخلية والخارجية. ومشكلات الاندماج في المجتمعات المستقبلة. وسياسات الهجرة في الدول المستقبلة والموفدة. وآثار الهجرة في المجتمعات المستقبلة والموفدة من الناحية الاقتصادية. والعوامل المحفزة على مأسسة "نظام الهجرة".
