أثار صعود تيار الإسلام السياسي إلى سدة الحكم، في بعض الدول العربية في السنتين الأخيرتين العديد من الأسئلة حول قدرة هذا التيار، والنهج الفكري الذي يمثله، في التعامل مع التحديات الاقتصادية الكبيرة التي كانت أحد الأسباب الرئيسية، لحدوث التغيرات السياسية التي شهدتها المنطقة العربية منذ بداية عام 2011، في إطار ما أطلق عليه اسم "الربيع العربي". وبالتركيز على حالة مصر، نجد أن العامل الاقتصادي لعب دوراً رئيسياً في إنهاء حكم الرئيس محمد مرسي، المنتمي إلى جماعة الإخوان المسلمين، لمصر بعد سنة واحدة فقط من توليه المنصب. فالمشكلات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية نفسها التي أودت بحكم الرئيس المصري السابق حسني مبارك في 11 فبراير 2011، عصفت أيضاً بحكم جماعة الإخوان المسلمين لمصر، وأنهت سريعاً وجودهم في السلطة. أوجه الشبه، أو الفشل، واضحة تماماً هنا. وقد فشلت سياسات "الحزب الوطني الديمقراطي" للرئيس مبارك، وكذلك برنامج "حزب الحرية والعدالة" الذراع السياسية لجماعة الإخوان، كلّ واحد بطريقته الخاصة، في توفير الحد الأدنى والمقبول من "العيش والحرية والعدالة الاجتماعية" للمصريين. اختار الرئيس مبارك، في السنوات السبع الأخيرة من حكمه، التعامل مع المشكلات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية في مصر عن طريق تطبيق سياسات اقتصادية "نيوليبرالية"؛ أدت إلى زيادة معدلات النمو الاقتصادي، لكنها، في الوقت نفسه، رفعت معدلات الفقر والبطالة والبؤس للغالبية الساحقة من المصريين، وزادت حدة فوارق الدخل بين الطبقات الاجتماعية.
