حين نتكلم على الشرق الأوسط، فذلك يعني قبل أي شيء النزاع العربي- الإسرائيلي. من هذا المنطلق، يشتمل الشرق الأوسط على البلدان الواقعة في تلك المنطقة الحافلة بالتوترات: سوريا، لبنان، الأردن، فلسطين وإسرائيل. وقد خرجت مصر من هذه المنطقة التي كانت منفتحة إبَان الحقبة العثمانية، قبل أن تشكَل صلة وصل بين أوروبا وآسيا، عادت وانغلقت تدريجياً. وقد ساهم الصراع العربي- الإسرائيلي في إبعاد الإستثمارات وتحويل الحركات التجارية عنها، إلا أن تأثيره كان بليغاً بشكل خاص على تكوين هذه الدول. فسوريا ولبنان والأردن هي بلدان نشأت في نفس الوقت التي قامت فيه دول اسرائيل. بالطبع، اختارت هذه الدول مسارات متباينة في المجالين الإقتصادي والسياسي، لكن الفروقات ليست كثيرة بالقدر الذي يتراءى لنا، بسبب تقاربها الثقافي.
من هنا السعي لتبيان وحدة وتنوَع بلدان الشرق الأوسط العربي المعاصر- سوريا، لبنان، الأردن وفلسطين- فذاك هو الطموح الذي يسعى إلى تحقيقه هذا الأطلس، الذي يعتبر الأول من نوعه.
