الهدف الذي يبتغيه هذا الكتاب لم يكن عرض تراجم علماء الحديث على الطريقة التقليدية المتبعة في كتاب تراجم الرجال، إنما الذي قصد إليه ذكر ما يتعلق بأخبارهم في سرعة القراءة والصبر على السماع، ورتبت تراجمهم في الباب الأول حسب المدى الزمنية التي كانوا يقرؤون فيها الكتب الحديثية، كما رتبت تراجمهم في الباب الثاني في الصبر على تكرار قراءة الكتاب حسب عدد المرات...
وهكذا جعل هذا البحث في ثلاثة أبواب:
الباب الأول: لمحات من سرعة القراءة عند المحدثين -حسب عدد المجالس أو الأيام-.
الباب الثاني: لمحات من صبر المحدثين على تكرار قراءة الكتاب وسماعه.
الباب الثالث: نماذج ممن عرفوا بسرعة القراءة والصبر على السماع في العصر الحديث.
