لا توجد دراسات موضوعية قام بها العرب يمكن أن يعتمدها الآخرون مرجعاً لثقافتهم الإسلامية. ويعود هذا العجز إلى ثلاثة أسباب، الأول نشأ عن مواقف المدارس الإسلامية القديمة التي تنظر إلى الإسلام بوصفه ديناً نهائياً ذا طابع مغلق، يحتوي بداخله الحقيقة المطلقة، ويملك الطريق الوحيد للإنقاذ.
السبب الثاني يتلخص في كون المجتمع الإسلامي الحديث بكامله -بطريقة تدعو للأسف- غير مبال بأصل حضارته وتطورها وإنجازاتها، وقد نتجت هذه اللامبالاة عن نظام التعليم الفاشل من ناحية، وعن الانهماك في مجاولات التأقلم مع المشكلات الحالية من ناحية أخرى. بل أكثر من ذلك لا تجد طرق البحث العلمي المنتشرة عالمياً قبولاً في تلك المجتمعات.
أما السبب الثالث لانقطاع المسلمين في الشرق عن حضارتهم، فيكمن في عدم القدرة على الحوار البناء، إذ تصنف كل مناقشة للدين أو الحضارة ببساطة في إحدى الخانات التالية: اعتذارية (بشكل أو بآخر) إصلاحية- أو "رجعية"- كهنوتية، دعوة إلى التغريب، مناقشة سياسية دعاية.
يتميز تاريخ الإسلام بأنه فاتن وخطير: فاتن لأنه يدعو إلى نسق وبناء، كل شيء أتى إلينا ضمن إطار ثقافي وإيديولوجي: لدينا نظرية دينية وقليل من البراهين على الدين الحقيقي المعيش، نظرية سياسية وقليل من الوثائق السياسية، نظرية تاريخية وقليل من المعلومات المحددة، نظرية في البناء الاجتماعي وقليل من البيانات الاقتصادية، إلخ. فنحن في خطر دائم إزاء خلط النظرية بالواقع، فأحدهما جاهز وقابل للتبني، بينما يتطلب الآخر مزيداً من البحث والتمحيص.
يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يحلل بموضوعية موقف المسلم من ثقافته، وكذلك موقفها من الكون ومن ثقافات الآخر ينف إن كنت ترغب في جرأة الطرح وكذلك في مباشرة الهدف، فإن هذه الدراسة ستستهويك، وتعطيك مجالا للتفكير فيما لم تفكر فيه من قبل.
