يتناول الكتاب الرابع في سلسلة (علماء مكرمون) التي تصدرها دار الفكر في مآثر أحد أفراد أسرتها. وتكرم فيه (الدكتور شوقي أبو خليل) أحد المؤرخين الذين اهتموا بالتاريخ العربي الإسلامي، ووقفوا من أجله أقلامهم المخلصة يبينون الزيف، ويشيرون إلى الحقائق ويقدمون أجمل ما عندهم. ويضم باقة من المقالات التي تتحدث عن مؤلفاته التي بلغت أكثر من أربعين عملاً جليلاً في التاريخ والتربية، بعضها في أجزاء، وطبع معظمها طبعات عديدة، فضلاً عما ترجم إلى اللغات الأخرى، وكان لبعض كتبه هذه أن اعتمدتها عدة جامعات مقررات لها، ولقيت القبول والاستحسان. ويضم أيضاً مقالات تبين مكانة الدكتور شوقي في عيون أصدقائه وطلابه، كما عرفوه أخاً وزميلاً، وصديقاً، ومديراً، ومربياً، وفارس فكر، ورحالة تاريخ، وتحلل أعماله برؤية تشتمل على حقائق وعبر. وتقف على بعض مؤلفاته بالدراسة، كما تدرس شخصيته العلمية المتميزة. ويحتوي على بحوث مهداة للعالم المكرم من علماء ومفكرين مشهورين، تتصل بتاريخ الأمة العربية وثقافتها ولغتها، كتاريخ نشوء القوميات، أو تقويم الدعوة إلى ترسيخ اللغة العامية ونقدها، أو مقتطفات من كتب قيمة، وتحليل العلمانية بين الدولة وشروط النهضة، أو دراسة لمصنف لغوي كبير، أو بحث في اللغة العربية وتاريخها، أو في المخطوطات العربية، أو قصيدة وجدانية في المكرم، مع وثائق هامة ومفيدة نافعة.
