يتناول هذا الكتاب بأسلوب مسرحي شعري غزوة تبوك، وأحداثها، واستعداد الروم وبعض أتباعهم من قبائل العرب لحرب المسلمين، ويصرح الرسول باتجاهه إلى تبوك، والحر شديد والسفر بعيد، والثمار طابت، ويعتذر إلى بعض الصحابة لعدم تمكنه من حملهم للغزوة، ويستنكف المنافقون عن المشاركة ، ويبين موقفهم ضد الرسول، وضد الصحابة الذين خُلفوا، وهم كعب ابن مالك ومِرار ابن ربيعة وهلال ابن أمية، ويُظهر ندم الصحابة الثلاثة على تخلفهم، وفي الطريق يسأل الرسولُ عن كعب، ويتمكن أبو خيثمة من اللحاق بركب الرسول بعد تلكئه فيُسر به الرسول. ويصف قدوم الوفود على الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وإعطاءهم الأمان منه، ويستشير الرسول أصحابه في مطاردة الروم، فلا يطاردهم، ويعود الرسول إلى المدينة، ويواجه في الطريق تآمر المنافقين على قتله وإخفاقهم، ودعوتهم الرسول إلى الصلاة في مسجد أنشؤوه، فلم يفعل، وعدم نجاحهم في استغلال المواقف. يعتذر المنافقون إلى الرسول عن تخلفهم، فيكل أمرهم إلى الله، ويدع أمر الصحابة الثلاثة الذين خلفوا، ليقضي الله فيهم بأمره، ويأمر المسلمين بعدم الكلام معهم، ويأمرهم باعتزال نسائهم، ويحاول كعب الصلاة قريباً من الرسول، فينظر إليه الرسول في صلاته، ويعرض عنه إذا التفت إليه، ولا يدري أرد السلام عليه أم لا! ويُمتحن كعبٌ بكتاب ملك غسان يطلب إليه اللحاق به، فيحرق الكتاب ويعدُّه من البلاء. وتضيق الأرض على الثلاثة بما رحبت حتى نزل أمر الله تعالى بالتوبة عليهم، فيهنئهم الرسول والمسلمون، ويتصدق كعب بجُل ماله إلى الله وإلى الرسول، ويغدو كعبٌ وصاحباه مثلاً أعلى يُحتذى في الصدق والاستقامة والعمل على سلامة المجتمع بمسارعتهم إلى الهدى ونوال رضاء الله بصدقهم واستقامتهم.
