يتتبع الكتاب تطور الحركة البيئية، ويستكشف أهم الموضوعات التي شغلت النقاد البيئويين، مثل التلوث، الحياة البرية، الرؤيا، السكن، الحيوانات، والأرض. أسهم هذا الكتاب، الصادر عن دار “راوتلج” ضمن سلسلة “المفاهيم النقدية”، في إحداث تحول أساسي في مسيرة تطور النقد الثقافي، والأدبي عامة، حين نشر سنة 2004 .. برز الحقل الذي يرتاده الكتاب في مطلع التسعينات من القرن العشرين، وقد استمد هذا النهج النقدي قوته وشرعية وجوده من حركات حماية البيئة، التي نشطت في ستينيات القرن العشرين. اتسع حقل النقد البيئوي ليغطي مواضيع مختلفة مثل: الإعلام والنصوص الأدبية والظواهر الثقافية، وهو خليط من عدة مناهج نقدية ويعرف جرارد النقد البيئوي، فيقول: “إنه دراسة علاقة ما هو إنساني بمحيطه على مدى التاريخ الثقافي البشري، وتقديم تحليل ناقد لمصطلح (الإنساني) ذاته ، ويؤكد جرارد أن المعرفة البيئوية تعد مهاداً صالحاً للتحول، وليست أرضاً قفراً، لذا فإن حيوية علم التبيؤ ومرونته أتاحتا مجالاً لدخول النقد الأدبي مكوناً محتملاً في أي تحليل نقدي بيئوي، فضلاً عن الفلسفة وعلم الاجتماع وعلم النفس والاقتصاد، وربما التصورات التنبؤية الأخروية.
