للكاتب العراقي محمود البياتي ظرف حتى في المبكي والمفجع، بل خاصَة حيث يصورهما، وسخرية تلتقط اللحظة فتجعلها نافذة تطلَ على الكابوس أو باباً له [..] إنه بارع في التقاط لحظة الغرابة والتناقضات هذه وتصويرها في حزن مضحك وفي ضحك حزين أحياناً أخرى.
في قراءة قصصه الممتعة القصيرة، والقصيرة جداً أحياناً، قد يجد القارئ نفسه لا في أجواء الكوابيس وحسب، بل الأحلام المضحكة أيضاً والبعيدة الغور، وخلال ذلك يجد في بعض ملامح أسلوبه وقسماته مشابه تعيد إلى الأذهان، ودون انتقاص في هذا الأسلوب، أسماء منها (فرانز كافكا)، وأيضاً شقيق كافكا الروحي (سامويل بيكيت)، ومنها أيضاً –في المجال العربيَ- بعض ما كتبه (إبراهيم عبد القادر المازني) في زمنه، و(يوسف الشاروني) في زمننا، خاصَة في (مطاردة منتصف الليل) بصرف النظر عمَا تذكَرنا به هي ذاتها.
