Book Description
In the Victorian period, the kitchen, or scullery as it was referred to, was “back of house” or even located in a detached building. However, following the Second World War, the kitchen became pivotal to the design of the house. In the 1950s the kitchen progressed to being a showpiece of modernity.
The 1960s saw a bridging of the kitchen and informal meals area. As women entered the workforce the division between the kitchen and the dining area became less defined.
As this book illustrates, the humble kitchen has come a long way. As well as being integral to large open-plan living areas, the contemporary kitchen often extends to outdoor living spaces. One of the most significant influences on modern kitchens has been a shift towards alfresco dining.
Another recent trend is a move towards the use of sophisticated materials in kitchens. Concrete poured in situ, American oak, cherry wood, Corian and marble can all feature.
There is a continuum of kitchen types in this book, from the sleek and expensive to the simple and more economical. However, what all these kitchens share is the desire to place the kitchen centre stage.
