ينهج إلياس فركوح في روايته منهجاً مغايراً ومختلفاً عما ألفه الروائيون فالأحداث عنده لا تتبع نظاماً معيناً دقيقاً بل تتدفق الأزمنة لتخدم بنية الرواية وتأتمر بوعي الكاتب الذي يوجه مسارها ويحقق القصد من وراء حركة الشخوص وسير الأحداث والنص الروائي الذي ينفتح علينا في هذا الكتاب يقترح مفاتيح عديدة لفهمه والولوج إليه بعدد القراء المحتملين له. تتفاعل في هذه الرواية أحداث الماضي بالحاضر، والخاص بالعام، والذاتي بالموضعي بما يضفي عليها أجواء غريبة وساحرة تفصح عن ثراء تجربة المؤلف وامتلاكه لقدرات وتقنيات وظفت في سياق النص بمهارة، وقد حفلت الرواية باقتباسات وإحالات عديدة من الكتاب المقدس، والعهد القديم، وسفر زكريا وربما جاء هذا في إطار توظيف الرموز للتعبير عن بعض الوقائع بشكل غير مباشر. فالرجل الأربعين كان (يتذكر) أحداث الزمان الماضي "المكان كان قبل الميلاد كما يحول له أن يسمى الفائت من الأحداث" وتحتشد الرواية بتلك التفاصيل التي تذكر القارئ بأحداث تدخل في صلب الحياة اليومية العربية والتي ما زالت تلقي بظلالها على حياته اليومية في هذه الرواية تحضر الوجوه الغائبة، وتبرز تلك التفاصيل الغائبة، حيث رائحة الأوراق والأشجار المتيبسة تختلط برائحة الدخان والتبغ المحترق، وحيث الحرائق تصعد في النهار... لا يراها أحد.
