"عن بعد: يكتب لها وهو يحترق. تقرأ له وهي تبكي. يسمعها الآخرون، ينتبهون أو لا ينتبهون... شيء كالدمع المحترق يتجدد. من شاهق: بندقية صيد متطورة، تمسك بها يدٌ مرتجفة بجلد مكرمش عجوز، وكيف محمّرة لزجة. حدقةُ عين مجسمة وراء عدسة مقرّبة مشطورة بصليب دقيق. الإصبع على الزناد، عن قرب: بسيران معاً. وفجأة تزعق السماء وتومض. فيفرحان لأنهما يعلمان أنّ مطراً سيغسلهما. يسيران معاً. يدها بيده، فجأة وسط المدينة يصرخ صوت.. ترتخي الأصابع.. ينبت الخوف في الوجه.. يطير الأمان، يصرع الأمل، يسقطان، يختلط المطر بالدم، يختلط الحب بالموت. وصية: الحياد جريمة، السكوت جريمة، والكلام أمضى من القتل.. لنكتب إذن، فالكتابة صلاة الكلمات بالكلمات".
القصة القصيرة عند إلياس فركوح لها مذاق خاص، فلن تجد نفسك في عالم القصة التقليدي حيث الحكاية المتحركة داخل المثلث المشهور. وأيضاً لن تغرق في عالم الرموز مما يدفعك إلى الشعور بالغربة عن اللغة التي تقرأ بها، رغم أنها لغتك، ألم يدفعنا بعض الكتاب إلى ذلك الإحساس. وعالم إلياس فركوح في هذه المجموعة هو عالم المدينة العربية وضواحيها. ففي جملتها تدور أحداثها في مدينة عمّان باستثناء بعض القصص، إلا أن تلك لم تنفصل عن عالم المدينة العربية بكل تناقضاتها الطبقية وهمومها السياسية، وهي الهموم التي تندمج وتتلاشى في داخلها كل الهموم الأخرى.
أما شخصياته فمن الطبيعي أن تكون ممثلة لطبيعة سكّان المدن ولكنه يميل إلى اختيار أفراد ينتمون إلى قطاعات اجتماعية بسيطة، أو تلك التي تنتمي إلى جماعات المغمورين أبطال القصة القصيرة منذ تشيكون وموباسان (امرأة ليل، بائع صحف، عمّال، مثقفي البرجوازية الصغيرة... الخ). وحين يتعامل الكاتب مع تلك الشخصيات، داخل المدينة، فإنه يقدم للقارئ لوحة فنية يلتحم فيه الإنسان والمدينة بحيث يمكن له أن يتعرف على أحدهما من خلال الآخر.
