"إلّا أنَّ تحليل دورفمان لكلِّ ما هو سطحيٌّ يذهب أبعد من ذلك (يتردَّد منّا الواحد في القول: أعمق من ذلك). ففي المنطقة المتغيِّرة التي يتناوب الكاتب فيها بين كلِّ ما هو حقيقيٌّ وخياليٌّ، وتدور فيها أحداث الرواية، لم يعد الوجه جزءاً من نفسنا الطبيعيَّة بل أصبح ينتمي إلى ثقافة ما، فالوجه هنا قناع نرثه من آبائنا إلى حدٍّ كبير، فالابن يرث، ويجدِّد قناع أبيه، أو وجهه. لهذا السبب، يستمرُّ النظام الأبويُّ هذا إلى الأبد. وجهنا جزء من تقديم أنفسنا، تماماً كملابسنا، إنَّما ليس في وسعنا أن نخلعه بالطريقة نفسها التي نخلع فيها ملابسنا. ومع ذلك، من الخطأ بمكان أن نعتقد أنَّ تحت هذا الوجه الذي نرتديه تكمن نفسنا الحقيقيَّة، لأنَّه لا يوجد شيء من قبيل أنَّنا لا نرتدي وجهاً. الاستثناء الوحيد لهذه القاعدة هو وجود طفل صغير لم تتكوَّن ملامح وجهه بعد، ولا سيّما طفلة صغيرة مثل أوريانا. واستثناء آخر هو الرجل عديم الوجه في روايتنا. إنَّما لن يتسنَّى لطفل صغير أو رجل بلا وجه أن يكونا جزءاً من هذا النظام الاجتماعيِّ. ج. م. كوتزي "
