اختلفت المصادر في بعض تفاصيل لقبه بين (الأسكر) و (الأشكر)، وأقدم إشارة إليه نجدها في كتاب الجمهرة النسب للكلبي (ت204هـ) في الحديث عن نسب بني جندع من كنانة واسمه أمية ابن الاسكر، كما ذكره أبو عبيدة (ت209هـ) في كتابه (مجاز القرآن)، حيث استشهد بأحد أبياته في تفسير إحدى آيات سورة النساء وسماه أمية بن الاسكر الليثي، كما وضعه ابن سلام الجمحي (ت231هـ) على رأس الطبقة العاشرة في كتابه الطبقات، قال: (هو أمية بن حرثان بن الأشكر بن عبد الله بن سرابيل الموت، من بني جندع بن ليث بن بكر بن عبد مناة بن كنانة).
أما أبو حاتم السجستاتي (235هـ) في كتابه المعمرين فيلقبه بالأسكر، إذ يقول: (وعاش أمية بن الأسكر من بني ليث من بكر بن عبد مناة بن كنانة دهراً طويلاً وأدرك الإسلام، فأسلم وأسلم ابن له يقال له كلاب).
