تلحق فرانسيس شو بزوجها المهندس الذي ذهب إلى جدة لتحقيق حلم حياته بإقامة صرح هندسي فريد وجمع الأموال اللازمة لحياة آمنة، لدى وصولها إلى جدة تجد الراوية نفسها وسط بيئة غريبة فيزيقياً، ثقافياً، واجتماعياً. تحاول الفهم.. بيد أن الشخصيات المحيطة بها شائهة، تفسر الأشياء وفقاً لخيالات وأهداف مريضة في مجملها. تتلمس إجابات عن تساؤلاتها ولا تلقى إلا المراوغة والتبريرات الغرائبية، بل والصد. تعتمد فرانسيس على نفسها لفهم الواقع حولها، لكنها تجد أنها تبتعد عن الحقيقة أميالاً، إذ لا تسجل عيناها وأذناها ووجدانها المشوش العصابي سوى وقائع منعزلة تجعل من حياتها كابوساً وتزوج بها في شبكة أحداث عنكبوتية تصبح معها أسيرة الجدران والخواء المأهول بأشباح انطباعاتها. كانت هيلارى مانتل، في مستهل حياتها، قد رافقت زوجها الذى كان قد ذهب للعمل بجدة. أرادت في هذا العمل تصوير تجربتها في جدة تجربة كابوسية. حققت هدفها باستخدام أسلوب عزل الوقائع السلبية التي تؤدي في مجموعها إلى خلق الانطباع الذي أرادته. من هنا تأتي هذه الرواية عملاً خلافياً. فهي ليست تمثيلاً للحقيقة بالمفهوم الأرسطي. بل تمثيلاً لوقائع منتقاة. بيد أنه يظل علينا القول إنه من غير الجائز فهم النص الأدبي حرفياً، إذ إنه يظل، ومهما اقترب من الواقع، إبداعاً خيالياً
