نبذة النيل والفرات: موضوع المتاهة من المواضيع التي لم تطرق كثيراً وبتوسع من قبل الكتاب والباحثين. وقد تكون هناك أسباب قد دفعت الباحثين بالإعراض عن الكتابة في هذا الموضوع. وربما الإعراض من ناحية يرجع على هذا المفهوم في حد ذاته، وما يحدثه من إسقاطات في نفسية الكاتب أو القارئ. وقد يكون الخوف من التفسيرات المغرضة لهذا النوع من المواضيع المتاهية، جعلت هذا الموضوع غير مطروق بكفاية من قبل الكتاب والباحثين. وعندما يطرح "محمد بالروين" مواضيع هذا الكتاب تحت عنوان البحث عن المتاهة، ليس في ذهنه سوى أمرين، إزالة الغموض والتشويش لكثير من المفاهيم التي تمسنا مباشرة، أو تمس حياتنا باعتبارنا أفراد نعيش داخل مجتمعات تحمل تراكمات من صنعنا، وتخضع لتفسيراتنا الخاصة. والأمر الثاني تشجيع القراء ورفع هاجس الخوف من الانتقادات والتفسيرات التي قد تكون غير منصفة التي قد يتعرض لها وراد هذا المجال، وخاصة عندما يناقشون بعرض المواضيع بنوع من الجسارة. اشتمل هذا الكتاب على ثمانية فصول. الفصل الأول اختص بالبحث عن الذات وما يترتب عن إثبات الذات من إثبات للوجود. والفصل الثاني اختص بالبحث عن (الهوية) وعن الحالات التي قد تقع فيها الإنسان فتسبب له نوعاً من الضجر. الفصل الثالث خصص للبحث في ظاهرة التعنس باعتبارها متاهة.البصر. الفصل الرابع خصص للمتاهة عند اليونانيين وأطلق على هذا الفصل المتاهة المكانية. الفصل الخامس أطلق عليه المتاهة الصوفية، وأهم عناصره الوحدة والنشوة الصوفية. الفصل السادس خصص للمتاهة السلوكية. فحددت فيه بعض الأنماط السلوكية التي تبدو في صورة متاهة. أما الفصول الثلاثة الأخيرة تعتبر دراسة معمقة لبعض الأفكار التي يثيرها كولن ولسون في كتابه إله المتاهة.
