إن الحديث عن القيم ليس بالأمر الهين، وخصوصاً عندما تكون النية متجهة إلى تحديد قيمة (الحب) لتضاف إلى سلسلة من القيم المتعارف عليها مثل الحق والخير والجمال. وفي هذا الكتاب يبحث الدكتور "محمد محمد بالروين" عن الحب باعتباره مفهوماً مجرداً خارجاً عن الذات، ينبغي معالجته كقيمة إنسانية سواء أكانت تتعلق بالحق أو الخير أو الجمال، منطلقاً من رؤية مفادها "أن الإنسان نفسه يسعى إلى إقرار الحق وإلى طلب الخير وتذوق الجمال وفي نفس الوقت لديه شعور خفي وحاجة إلى أن يحب وأن يكون محبوباً. لقد جرب الإنسان وسائل متعددة في الوصول إلى الحب، كما جرّب طرقاً متعددة إلى الحق والخير والجمال ... ولما كان في الإمكان وضع قواعد لهداية الفكر حتى يتم الوصول إلى الحكم الصادق ... كذلك أمكن تحديد قواعد معينة يتبعها الإنسان لتهذيب ذوقه حتى يتخذ عمله صبغة جمالية معينة، فإن الحب هو الآخر يمكن أن تحدد له بعض الطرق التي تقود إلى انعقاده وتكون سبباً في إحداثه ...".
من هنا جاء اهتمام المؤلف بطرق هذا الموضوع الإنساني والكشف عن بعض من جوانبه الغامضة، في سعي حثيث للإجابة عن اسئلة مثل: لماذا نحب؟، وكيف نحب؟ وخصوصاً في هذا العصر الذي زاد فيه التكالب على الماديات وأصبحت شريعته خذْ ثم هات، ففقد الحب معناه، ولم تعد قضية الإنسان وحاجاته المعنوية تثير الإهتمام.
يقسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة محاور/ عناوين هي: 1- قيمة الحب في التجربة الإنسانية من وجهة نظر فلسفية، 2- التفكير في الحب ذاتياً وإنسانياً، 3- نبضات من وعي الوجدان.
