بطل الرواية هو "إيميه فيكتور أوليفيه" رائد استعمار إفريقيا الغربية والذي سقط من سقط من أضابير تاريخ فرنسا ومن مستنداتها، بل أيضًا اعتبرته الحكومة الفرنسية آنذاك مجنونًا، والمكان الذى تدور فيه أحداث الرواية هو "كاهل" وهو مقاطعة صغيرة فى هضاب "فوتا دجالون" المملكة الفيدرالية التى تقع فى وسط غينيا الحالية. وزمان الرواية هو النصف الثانى من القرن التاسع عشر، حيث يطارد "أوليفيه" أحلامه الطوباوية فيقصد "فوتا دجالون" ويسعى من خلال لقائه بالرئيس الأعلى إلى تحقيق ما يصبو إليه عبر رحلة محتشدة بالدسائس ومحاولات القتل والحيل السياسية فى مجتمع يدين بحكمة "البوهل" التى ترى أن الحياة تعنى الخداع المتبادل، وهكذا يُمنح المُلك ويصير "ملك كاهل" ويتحول إلى سيد من أسياد "البوهل".
يقول الروائى "تيرنو مونينمبو" ناعيًا سقوط بلده غينيا وإفريقيا السوداء كلها التى لم تحصد حتى هذه اللحظة ثمار استقلالها: إن عجز المثقف الإفريقى انعكس على جميع المجالات؛ لأنه منذ البداية لم يهتم أبدًا بالذاكرة الجماعية الإفريقية قبل أن يتم اختفاء هذه الذاكرة بابتلاعها.
إن الروائى هنا وهو يكتب سيرة "أوليفيه" الذى صار "الكونت ساندرفال" لا يستعيد ذاكرة مُلك "الكونت" ومعاهداته ــ التى لم تعترف بها الحكومة الفرنسية بعد أن تقاسمت الدول الكبرى بلدان العالم كمستعمراتٍ لها ــ وإنما يستعيد أيضًا ذاكرة غينيا وذاكرة إفريقيا السوداء. متكئًا على التاريخ الواقعى والملحمي، ولكن أيضًا بعد أن يمنح لأبطاله ملامح روائية تحولهم إلى شخوصٍ من لحمٍ ودمٍ، وملامح وشعرية.
