لم تذكر كتب التاريخ الشيء الكثير شيئاً عن أول عهد الأندلسيين بالغناء العربي. لكن بعض المؤرخين يرجح أنه بدأ قبل دخول زرياب الأندلس بمدة لا تزيد عن عشرين عاماً. كما أجمع المؤرخون أن العرب بعد فتحهم الأندلس نقلوا معهم إلى اسبانيا الشعر والموسيقى فيما نقلوه من ثقافتهم وعلومهم. وحافظوا لوقت طويل على تقاليدهم تلك، حتى جاء زمن تأثر فيه شعراء العرب بطبيعة البلاد فاختلف شعرهم عما ألفوه من شعراء المشرق. في هذه الأجواء الجديدة نشأ الموشح وأصبح مادة غنية خصبة، وشاع في أهل الأندلس وأخذ به الجمهور لسلاسته وتنميق كلامه وترصيد أجزائه، كما يقول ابن خلدون. ويعتقد البعض أن هناك عاملين قويين شاركا في خلق الموشح أحدهما التجديد الذي أدخله زريات ومن بعده تلامذته في الألحان في الأندلس والثاني هو التفنن العروضي الذي أوجده أمثال ابن عبد ربه في البيئة الأندلسية. وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف دراسة علمية تاريخية عن الموشحات ونشأتها وتطورها مستقياً معلوماته من مصادر ومراجع أصيلة لها قيمتها التاريخية. كما أنه يقدم تدوينات للموشحات بالعلامات الموسيقية، إضافة إلى الكثير من الشروح الوافية والمعلومات الضافية عن نظم الموشح وتلحينه وإنشاده.
