يعد كتاب "تاريخ الموسيقى الشرقية" لمؤلفه "سليم الحلو" بمثابة تاريخ شامل لأحكام وقواعد الموسيقى العربية وجملة مواضيعها، فضلاً عن التعريف في آلاتها وسلالمها الموسيقية وأصل نشوئها ونظرياتها وتطورها منذ أن عرفت الموسيقات حتى عصرنا هذا. يقول المؤلف عن عمله هذا "... جد اجتهادي الشخصي جمع هذه المعلومات وترتيبها وتنسيقها ومقارنتها لبعضها بعضاً، واختيار الصحيح منها في النهاية..، وتفسير بعض الاصطلاحات والمقاطع النظرية والغنائية القديمة بصورة تعطي المستمع إليها أو الناظر بها فكرة صحيحة عن طابع الغناء القديم وأسلوبه ولونه اللحني موفوقة بصور ايقاعاتها (موازينها) الموسيقية القديمة، ومحولة بواسطة تدوينها بالنوتة الموسيقية التي هي (لغة الأصوات اللحنية) في هذا العصر، مع ترجمة الأسماء القديمة للأصوات والعلامات الاصطلاحية التي استعملها العرب قديماً ومقابلتها بالأسماء المعروفة لدينا اليوم...". كتاب هام يستند إلى دراسات طويلة وتجارب قام بها المؤلف مع أهم علماء الموسيقى أمثال منصور عوض، وديع صبرا وآخرون إضافة إلى التحقيق في مخطوطات قديمة لعلماء أجانب، مستشرقين أمثال البارون دي ارلنجر، ولويس هابا، وغيرهم فضلاً عن مقابلات دقيقة ومقارنات كثيرة اجراها ليخرج لنَا بكتاب هو ضروري لكل دارس للموسيقى نظراً لما يحتويه من مادة معرفية قيمة.
