ويتناول الكتاب عبر فصوله الخمس كل شىء عن الموشحات وبداية ظهورها، فيعرض العطار فى الفصل الأول من الكتاب لتاريخ الموشحة وهو الفن الشعرى العظيم الذى توصلت إليه العبقرية العربية فى الأندلس، ويشير العطار إلى أن البحث عن نشأة الموشحات عمل يشبه مهمة علماء الآثار فى الحفريات، ويعرف العطار كلمة الموشحة بأنها كلمة قديمة لا يعرف أحد كيف ظهرت أول مرة، ولكنه يتتبع ظهور هذه الكلمة كمصطلح أدبى ويتوصل إلى أن هذا المصطلح قد ولد فى بلاط الأمير عبد الله الأموى بقرطبة الأندلس، فى الربع الأخير من القرن الثالث الهجرى، كما يشير العطار إلى الاشتقاقات المختلفة للكلمة ومنها " الموشح هو الخصر ينعقد عليه الوشاح، والوشاح هو خيطان من لؤلؤ وجوهر منظومان يخالف بهما معطوف أحدهما على الآخر، وهو أيضا نسيج عريض مرصع بالجواه
