يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته أصول الموسيقى العربية وقواعدها العامة وهو في الأصل كتاب مدرسي أوجده المؤلف (سليم الحلو) لسدّ حاجة طلاب علم الموسيقى من فئة خاصة هي فئة مرحلتي التعليم الابتدائي، والابتدائي العالمي، ولكنه جعله كتاباً يغني الأستاذ والطالب عن عدة كتب، ويقدم لها جميع ما يحتاج إليه الموسيقي من مواد نظرية وفنية وعلمية تنيله الغاية المقصودة من التحصيل؛ ولقد نحاه عن الطابع المدرسي وجعله مستساغاً لدى طبقات كثيرة من القراء والطلاب يجمع لهم في قسمه الأول معلومات وافية عن قواعد الموسيقى (العامة) كالتدوين الموسيقي، وعلم السلاسل الصوتية والدواوين الموسيقية، وعلم الأصوات ومسافاتها وطبقاتها وتوزيعها على الآلات الموسيقية وتدوينها على مفاتيحها الموسيقية المختصة بكل طبقة من طبقاتها إلى غير ذلك. وفي أقسامه الباقية تضمن دراسة واسعة لكثير من قواعد ونظريات الموسيقى الشرقية على العموم والعربية على الخصوص، وتحليل للمقامات والأوزان وعلم صياغة الألحان مع وصف الآلات الموسيقية الشرقية والغربية وغير ذلك من الأبحاث التي لم يتعرض لتمحيصها وجمعها مؤلف نظري حتى اليوم. هذا الكتاب هو مؤلف مبتكر في نوعه جديد في بابه غني المادة والتنويع في غير تطويل ممل ولا تعقيد ولا غموض. فمن ناحية ترتيبه فقد جاءت أبحاثه واسعة ومواده غزيرة وهو بذلك يتيح لكل طالب وقارئ أن يستغل مواهبه وقواه الشخصية ليحصل على ما كان يتشوق إلى معرفته في هذا العلم الرياضي الجليل ويدرك من مطالعته وحفظه سر تذوق الموسيقى مما يفتح أمامه باب تربية ذوقه الكامن في تفهم القواعد والأساليب.
