غاصت الروائية سوزان مصطفى في أعماق أرواح وأجساد المرأة والرجل العربيين عبر سردها، الذي كان مكفهراً على الدوام بالحرقة والألم المنبثقين مما تعانيه المرأة من تعامل، من قبل الرجل، ينطلق دائماً من التهميش. وللوهلة الأولى، قد يعتقد القارىء أن هذه المقاربة بعيدة عن الواقع، إلا أن واقع الحال هو ذلك، حينما تتداخل الموروثات والتربية السيكولوجية الذكورية العربية مع العادات والتقاليد البالية إضافة إلى الأنانية الذكورية المفرطة لتجعل هذا جميعه أقرب ما يكون إلى لوحة سريالية لا سيما حينما تكون أغلب شخصيات الرواية من الشرائح المثقفة والمتعلّمة التي لم تكتف بتطبيق ذلك في الوطن، بل أخذت تمارسه ممارسة أكثر شراسة في بلد الاغتراب، حيث كانت تحصل علمياً.
في أشرعتها التي مزقها الذكر، رصدت سوزان مصطفى هذه الظاهرة عبر شخصيات مختلفة المنبت الديني والطبقي وأجيال مختلفة، كما أنها نقلك من أمكنة إلى أخرى كبيرة الاختلاف (سوريا، الاتحاد السوفييتي، ليبيا).
وهي في أشرعتها لم تنس الهم الاجتماعي العام وبفعل الفساد المستشري، إذ توصل إلى نتيجة تقول فيها أن المال كفيل بأن يشرع جميع الأبواب الموصدة وتجاوز جميع القوانين.
رواية تشعرك أثناء قراءتها أنك أمام كاتبة لم تغمس ريشتها حبراًً لتكتب بل كانت تغمسها من دم الأنثى العربية الطامحة للحرية والانطلاق.
