Ce dossier propose un commentaire littéraire de la Préface de 1832 du Dernier jour d'un condamné de Victor Hugo, précédé d'un résumé complet de l'oeuvre et d'une mise en contexte comprenant la situation de l'extrait et quelques informations essentielles sur le roman. La Préface a été ajoutée au texte en 1832, dans le but de proposer un authentique réquisitoire contre la peine de mort. Le commentaire composé se penche tout d'abord sur la peine de mort, que l'auteur considère comme une pratique « barbare et inhumaine » : il s'agit selon lui du dernier symbole de l'Ancien régime, une société dominée par l'arbitraire. Puis on s'intéresse dans un deuxième temps à l'opposition irréductible entre les partisans de la peine de mort et les Républicains. Un commentaire littéraire de référence pour mieux comprendre quelques-uns des enjeux majeurs de ce livre !
