Victor Hugo est un poète, dramaturge et prosateur romantique né le26 février 1802, il est reconnu comme étant l’un des plus illustres poètes et romanciers de la langue française. En 1829 il publie « le dernier jour d’un condamné ». Hugo se lance dans l’écriture de l’œuvre un soir alors qu’il avait aperçu quelques heures auparavant le bourreau graisser sa guillotine pour une exécution le lendemain. L’ouvrage se présente sous la forme du journal d’un homme qui est condamné a mort, le lecteur peut donc s’immerger complètement dans l’attente que subit le prisonnier jusqu’au moment fatidique, ainsi Hugo dénonce la cruauté et la torture psychique que suggère cette attente.
