كما عرف المجنون بمحبوبته ليلى وجميل ببثيينة فقد عرف أيضاً قيس بن ذريح بمحبوبته لبنى التي يسرت له الأقدار أن يتزوج منها زواجاً لم يدم سوى سنوات قليلة فقط؛ عاش أيامها ولياليها وهو يشعر بالسعادة والهناء... حتى وسوس له والده بطلاقه للبناه. فنزل عند رغبتها رغماً عنه، فطلقها ولا ذنب لها سوى ذنب عدم الإنجاب، فشعر قيس حينذاك بعقدة الذنب فراح ينظم الأشعار الرقيقة، ويبعث بها إلى لبنى طالباً منها الصفح والغفران والعودة إليه...
هذه هي القصص والأخبار أوردها صاحب كتاب الأغاني وابن شاكر الكتبي في كتابه "فوات الوفيات"، والسراح في كتابه "مصارع العشاق" وغيرهم كثير.
وفي هذا العمل يجمع الدكتور "عفيف نايف حاطوم" بدوره شعر قيس ابن ذريح دارساً إياه دراسة نقدية تحليلية مبيناً قدر الإمكان المحاسن والمساوئ، غير ملتزم –كما يقول- برأي صاحب كتاب، أو ديوان. فوجدت المحاسن في شعره أكثر بكثير من المساوئ فكتب على شعره الخلود من أجل ذلك".
هذا، وقد إعتمد الشارح كل الإعتماد على كتاب الأغاني الذي يعود لصاحبه الفضل الأكبر في حفظ معظم شعر قيس بن ذريح. مستهلاً كتابه بذكر كيفية بداية حب قيس للبنى، مروراً بزواجه منها، وانتهاءً بموته حزناً عليها وقد حدد سنة وفاته بسنة 69هـ.
وعليه يضم "ديوان قيس لبنى" أشعار قيس بن ذريح موزعة على بحور الشعر العربي وتبدأ بقافية الباء وتنتهي بقافية الباء.
