تنبني شعرية "عفيف نايف حاطوم" على تجربته الذاتية المعيشة فهي المنبع الأساسي الذي يفترق منه شعريته، فإحساسه بقضايا مجتمعه اللبناني على مرَ السنين وعشقه للأرض طبع قصائده بطابع خاص، وهذاما يؤكده نقاد كثر قرأوا حاطوم واستساغوا شعره، بل كتبوا فيه أجكل العبارات وفي (ديوان الفردوس المفقود) قصائد متنوعة لا تخلو من تساؤلات مرتبطة بالوجود والعيش المشترك والحب والعلاقات بين الناس، تنطوي على صور شعرية مبتكرة ضاجة بالمعاني تنطبع في ذاكرة القارئ ولا تغادره بسهولة، ذلك أنها تلامس المشاعر، وتمتلئ بالحنين إلى الزمن الجميل الذي عاشه الشاعر وها هو ينقله إلى قارئه...
وفي القصيدة التي يفتتح بها الشاعر الديوان يقول: ما طيب بعد عن الأوطان، والقلب مشتاق إلى الإخوان/ لحن الحبيب خمرة الألحان، ألوانه من أجمل الألوان/ بحديثه كم ليلةٍ هناني، وإلى النجوم الزهر كم غلاني(...)".
يضم ديوان الفردوس المفقود (104) قصيدة تنتمي إلى الشعر الموزون والمقفى كتبت في ثمانينيات وتسعينيات القرن العشرين نذكر من عناوينها: "نحن"، "بتقوى"، "أرى"، "أحلام الليل"، "أيها العيد"...الخ.
