هدف هذا الكتاب هو تقديم خلاصة وافية من "الحقائق العنيدة" التى تحيط بتلك الحرب ضد العراق المشكوك فى أمرها، وأيضاً عن التاريخ الطويل المشترك بيننا وبين ذلك البلد. العمود الفقرى لهذا الكتاب هو حوار مع دبليو. سكوت ريتر أحد أكثر الرجال، على وجه الأرض، معرفة بتاريخ العراق وسياساته وقدرته على التسلح. قضى ريتر سبع سنوات مفتشاً عن الأسلحة فى العراق، وأوكلت إليها مهمة تدمير برنامج أسلحة الدمار الشامل لصدام حسين. قام ريتر من عام 1988 وإلى عام1999 بمهمة التفتيش على الحد من الأسلحة فى الإتحاد السوفييتى سابقاً وطور لنفسه سمعة كضابط مخابرات ممتاز ومفتش فاعل عن الأسلحة. ترك قوات المارينز فى يونيو 1991 بنيةٍ كاملة للعمل فى القطاع الخاص. إلا أن القدر تدخل. اتصل به أحد المشرفين السابقين عليه. دعاه للإلتحاق باليونسكو (اللجنة الخاصة للأمم المتحدة) المفوضة بقرار مجلس الأمن رقم 687 الصادر فى إبريل 1991 لضمان تدمير جميع قدرات العراق، بلا استثناء، على إنتاج أسلحة الدمار الشامل، وكذلك وسائل الإنتاج، والمعدات وأنظمة الإطلاق وأيضاً كل التجهيزات والمعدات. إن ريتر شخص وطنى؛ رجل ذو سجل رائع مدهش فى خدمة بلده. وهو عضو فى الحزب الجمهورى من حاملى البطاقات. وقد صوت لصالح بوش فى انتخابات عام 2000. وريتر، أكثر من أى من الرجال الذين يضغطون الآن من أجل الحرب ضد العراق، شهد الوضع مباشرة فى مصدره. وهو يعرف كفاءات صدام حسين لتطوير الأسلحة وإنتاجها. ويعتقد أن ليس ثمة أساس للحرب من منطلق الأسباب التى توردها إدارة بوش. وهو يعرف المنطقة جيداً وينبغى أن تكون "الحقائق العنيدة" التى تتكون منها خبرته متطلباً لقراءتنا جميعاً قبل الشروع فى السير فى طريق سينتهى بكارثة أكيدة. قرر لنفسك
