الخيال اليوتوبي اصطلاح يبدو جديداً وغريباً على خارطة القضايا والمصطلحات الفلسفية التقليدية، برغم أن مصطلحي الخيال واليوتوبيا ولدا على أرض فلسفية، وبعد أن تحددت قسمات وملامح كل منهما انتقلا من مجال الفلسفة إلى مجال الأدب والعلوم الإنسانية..
واليوتوبيا بوصفها اللامكان أو المكان الخيالي بدأ بصورة متكاملة عند إفلاطون من خلال كتابه الجمهورية.
وبعد أفلاطون تواصل الإبداع اليوتوبي في العصرين الوسيط والحديث، وبلغ هذا المفهوم قمته في مرحلة عصر النهضة، أو ما يمكن أن نسميه بعصر الأحلام. أما في أيامنا الراهنة فنجد إلتباساً في التعامل مع الظاهرة من أقصى اليمين إلى أقصى اليسار فالبعض يستنتج من نهاية اليوتوبيا مستنداً في ذلك إلى دخول البشرية عصر العولمة أو حقبة الجنة الأرضية، حيث صار المستحيل ممكنا، وتطابقت الأرض مع السماء. هذا البحث هدفه الأساسي كشف العلاقة بين الخيال واليوتوبيا إيماناً منا بأن الأساس الإبستمولوجي والأنطولوجي لهما واحد. أو بعبارة أخرى أنهما ينبعان من مصدر واحد، ألا وهو تطلع الإنسان إلى عالم أفضل وهذا البحث هو محاولة للإجابة عن التساؤلات التالية..
