يشكل هذا الكتاب إحدى المراحل الفكرية الهامة فى فكر د. حسن حماد، الذى اهتم منذ فترة طويلة بموضوع الاغتراب بدءًا من دراسته عن الاغتراب عند إريك فروم، ومرورًا بدراسته عن الاغتراب عند أبى حيان التوحيدى، وفى هذا الكتاب يتعرض المؤلف لقضية الاغتراب فى الفلسفة الوجودية، والتى يرى أنها مازالت قادرة على الإجابة عن كثير من الأسئلة التى تؤرق العقل البشرى فى عصرنت الراهن، فالوجودية مثل أى فلسفة لم تمت، ونحن بحاجة ماسه إلى أن نستعيد فى الذاكرة مرة أخرى بعضًا من قضايا وأفكار الوجودية التى نسيناها فى صخب الحياة اليومية: كالقلق، الحرية، الغثيان، العبث، التمرد، الاغتراب. إننا بحاجة إلى مثل هذه الأفكار وغيرها كى توقظ فينا ما هو إنسانى وتعيد لنا مرة أخرى الثقة فى أننا مازلنا بشرًا، ومازال الهم الإنسانى هو محور تفكيرنا، وأننا لم ننس بعد أنفسنا برغم كل الضياع الذى يحيط بنا.
