يحتوي الجسم البشري على نشاطات إشعاعية ناجمة عن تحول ما يقارب الربع مليون ذرة في كل دقيقة تمر إلى ذرات أخرى داخل الجسم وتطلق أنوية هذه الذرات أثناء تحول طاقتها على شكل إشاعات. إن الاهتمام بموضوع الإشعاع يأتي من تعرض الكائن الحي وعلى رأسه الإنسان باستمرار لمختلف أنواع هذه الإشعاعات من مصادر مختلفة من داخل وخارج الجسم، لذلك لا بد أن يتم التعرف على آثار هذه الإشعاعات وخاصة أن مقدار تعرضنا لمصادرها آخذ الازدياد والانتشار بصورة كبيرة فالأسلحة النووية تصنع وتجرب بشكل واسع ومستمر وكذلك فإن استعمال المواد المشعة في التشخيص والعلاج الطبي بدأ يشيع أكثر من ذي قبل. إن جميع هذه المصادر تؤثر على الذين يعملون بها مباشرة بشكل خاص، وعلى السكان جميعًا بشكل عام. ورغم أن العلم قد كشف لنا النقاب عن الكثير من آثار هذه الإشعاعات في الوقت الحالي إلا أن الغموض ما يزال يحيط بها، مما يتطلب منا بذل المزيد من الجهد والتعمق في البحث للتعرف على تلك الآثار وبشكل أفضل حيث أن للإشعاعات فوائد ومضار لذا نتطرق إليها لتحديد فوائدها ولتجنب مضارها ما كان قدر المستطاع. يتعرض الإنسان إلى الكثير من مصادر الإشعاع في الحياة اليومية ويؤثر ذلك على الكثير من أجزاء الجسم البشري، فمثلا يؤثر الإشعاع على الجهاز الدوري من خلال تأثيره على خلايا الدم اللمفاوية وإحداث التشوهات الكروموسومية فيها، ولاننسى في هذ الصدد تعرض افنسان للأشعة الكونية الصادرة من الفضاء الخارجي وتعرضه للإشعاعات الضارة خلال تعامله مع النظائر المشعة سواء في مجالات الطب، الصناعة، والزراعة وكذلك تعرض العاملين في المفاعلات النووية والعاملين في المناجم التى تستخرج منها العناصر المشعة إلى الإشعاعات الصادرة من المواد المشعة مثل الراديوم واليورانيوم وغيرها. ولهذا فقد لزم الأمر أن تتظافر الجهود سواء على مستوى الإنسان الفرد والجماعات والدول لدرء هذا الخطر المحدق بنا جميعا فوق كوكبنا الأرض وذلك بالتعاون الوثيق واتباع كافة السبل.
