في كتابه هذا يعيد الدكتور رشيد دحدوح النظر في حقل معرفي يقوم على المزاوجة بين ماهية الفلسفة وماهية العلوم، وذلك عن طريق دراسة فيلسوف متمرد هو (كانفيلهم) الذي ركّز نقده على المعرفي للطب والبيولوجيا، وحلّل بكيفية دقيقة كيف كانت المعارف الحيوية موضوع إستقطابات إيديولوجية ودوغمائية لا علاقة لها بحقيقة الطب والممارسة الطبية.
وفي هذا المجال يضع المؤلف إشكالية محورية "تدور عموماً حول محاولة دراسة، وتحديد وفهم الأبعاد المعرفية، والفلسفية والأخلاقية لتطور علوم الحي، وفي مقدمتها الطب والفيزيولوجيا. ثم دور الواقع العلمي الجديد لعلوم الحياة في إعادة صياغة مفاهيم الحي والحياة والحي الإنسان خصيصاً".
هذه الإشكالية اقتضت من المؤلف خطوتين أساسيتين: الأولى نظرية مفاهيمية: تقوم على التحليل وضبط مختلف مفاهيم وتصورات الإبستمولوجيا الفرنسية المعاصرة من خلال تياراتها وروافدها الكبرى. والخطوة الثانية: عملية وتطبيقية، تقوم على التحليل والمناقشة إلى أهم المسائل والمواضيع التي طرحها كانفيلهم، وخلاصة الأفكار والمواقف التي انتهى إليها والتي في جوهرها لا تخرج عن التأكيد عن الأهمية الحيوية للعلاقة بين (العلوم التي تدرس" السوية" (Normalite) والفلسفة بمنهجيتها الفينومينولوجية التي تدرس المعيارية (Normativite).
