قبل أن يكون للشرق أداة سياسية تجمع، كان الشعر تلك الأداة، على أنها مع الأخطل الصغير بلغت مبلغها العلي العظيم. فإن وهنت وشائج بين نيلٍ ورافدين، أو تقطّعت أنفاس صبا بين نيلٍ ورافدين، تألقت بيروت بمقاتنِ شعرٍ، فأتلف شرق وشرقت بدموع الفرح عواصم ... وللبنان كان الأخطل الصغير سفيراً قبل العهد ببُعوث تنطلق.
بهذه العبارات قرأ "سعيد عقل" شعرية أمير الشعراء "الأخطل الصغير" في معرض تقديمه لديوانه الموسوم "الأخطل الصغير .. أمير الشعراء" قائلاً: "دفع ليَّ الديوان وكأنه وصية".
يضم الديوان قصائد الشاعر اللبناني بشارة الخوري (الأخطل الصغير) الشاعر الذي نذر حياته وقلمه للدفاع عن أمته وإيقاظ هممها ضد الإستعمار وكل أشكال الإستبداد، وهو الشاعر الذي تأثر شعره بحركات التجديد في الشعر العربي المعاصر فقدم للقارىء العربي قصائد لا تشبه إلا نفسها فيها من الأصالة وقوة السبك والديباجة، وجزالة الأسلوب، بالإضافة إلى تنوّع الأغراض الشعرية الكثير.
في الكتاب قصائد زمنها من زمن السلطان عبد الحميد لذلك فالقصيدة الأولى (عبرة وعبرة) نُظمت يوم سقط عرش السلطان عبد الحميد سنة 1909م. "قُلل الشرق حاذري أن تميدي / سقط العرش عرش عبد الحميد". وما بين 1909 و 1960م سيعثر القارىء لهذا الديوان على كل ما جادت به شعرية أمير الشعراء من قصائد أنشدها في مناسبات مختلفة ونُشرت سابقاً في صحف محلية لبنانية وعربية، وإصدارات للشاعر، نذكر من عناوينها: "عبرة وعبرة" ، "النوم الهني" ، "أترى يذكرونه؟" ، "أجل سئمنا الهوانا" ، "عادة الدهر" ، "شاعر الأطيار" ، "الفقراء" ، "العيون" ، "ماذا أقول له؟" ، "(...) وقصائد أخرى.
