شهدت الساحة الأدبية اللبنانية أواخر القرن الثامن عشر وأوائل التاسع عشر بروز نخبة من الأدباء شكلت أعمالهم منعطفاً هاماً في حركة الأدب على الصعيدين اللبناني والعربي التي أثرت هذه الحركة بأعمال متميزة ما زالت حيّة، يرنو إلى مطالعتها كل من تاقت نفسه إلى تلمس ذاك الأدب الذي يسمو بالأدب العربي؛ قصة "قصيدة" و"خاطرة"؛ ثم مقالة ونقداً إلى تلك المراتب التي تليق به، وإلى ذلك فإن أعمال تلك النخبة مثلت مرجعاً إلى من يبحث عن مجريات الأمور في تلك الحقبة على كل من الصعيد الإجتماعي والسياسي والفكري. ومن هؤلاء الذين مثلت حياتهم علامة فارقة الشاعر بشارة عبد الله الخوري الشهير بالأخطل الصغير وسبب تسميته اقتداءه بالشاعر الأموي الأخطل التغلبي. وفي هذا الكتاب من سلسلة "شعراء لبنان" موجز لحياة الأخطل الصغير، حيث تحدث المؤلف عن حياته، وشخصيته، وثقافته، ثم استعرض آثاره الأدبية وخصائصه الفنية وختم الكتاب بمختارات من شعره ونثره.
