ولد فسمى غياثاً، ثم دبّ فقالوا له دوبلاً، فلما نطق دعوه أخطلاً، وبهذا اللقب تربع على عرش الخلافة كشاعر للبلاط الأموي. شخصية متحررة تعشق المستحيل. دغدغها العنفوان التغلبي، ولفحتها نغصات الحياة، فثارت فعلاً، وخاضت شعراً كيفما رمى به أصاب. صريح حتى الوقاحة، جريء حتى التمرد، مخلص حتى الموت. هذا ما كان عليه الشاعر "غياث بن غوث بن تغلب الملقب بالأخطل" صاحب الديوان الذي جاء في طيات هذا الكتاب.
والأخطل شاعر أصيل الإلهام، جزل التعبير، جريء في أغلب شعره على طريقة الأقدمين وجدد في بعضه اليسير. ترك لنا الأخطل ديواناً ثرّاً يعدّ سجلاً تاريخياً موثقاً لكل أحداث عصره السياسية والمنازعات المحلية. وقد انتقل هذا الديوان مشافهة على ألسنة الرواة مدة عصور متتالية. والمتنقل في روضة هذا الديوان على صفحات هذا الكتاب يجد أن المدح والهجاء يؤلفان غالبيته حيث برع الشاعر في المدح، وأجاد في الهجاء دون فحش، محسناً توظيف شعره سياسياً بحيث يقرب من المسافة الكامنة بين الطبقة الحاكمة والشعب، ومظهراً حسن أخلاقهم، وصلاح أعمالهم وصواب دعوتهم.
وإذا ما جال القارئ بين القصائد التي ضمها هذا الديوان، يجد فن الوصف يطرق الخيال بقوة تصويره وقدرته على رسم لوحات متحركة خصبة. حيث فاق الشاعر معاصريه جميعاً بهذه القدرة. أما الرثاء فليس فيه سوى أربعة أبيات خصّ بها يزيد بن معاوية صاحب الفضل عليه، ورفيق درب كان كله مسرات.
