أبو نواس هو الحسن بن هانئ، اختلف الباحثون في سبب كنيته، وأهم الآراء في هذه الناحية رأيان: يقول أولهما أن أبا نواس كنيّ بذلك بسبب ذؤابتين (أي خصلتين من الشعر) كانتا تنوسان (أي تتدليان) على كتفه وهو صبي، ويذهب الرأي الثاني إلى القول إن أبا نواس كنىّ نفسه بذلك تيمناً بـ"ذي نواس" الحميري، وفي البصرة استقى أبو نواس العلم والمجون معاً، وذاع صيته في ذلك إذ إن شعره حمل تلك السمة كما اشتهر عنه نوادر وطرائف حملت أيضا من تلك السمة الكثير، وفي هذا الكتاب طائفة من تلك النوادر التي حملت الكثير من أخبار أبي نواس وعكست روح الفكاهة، ونكهة الدعابة، وبسرعة البديهة، لدى أبي نواس. لا يخلو أي تجمع إنساني من ذلك الشخص الطريف الذي وهبه الله البديهة والحساسية النقدية المرهفة، التي تجعله يلتقط أحداث الحياة وأحوالها العادية فتتحول على يديه إلى ضحك. وتاريخنا العربي، حافل بهذه الشخصيات المرحة الطريفة التي أبدعت ونسج الناس حولها الكثير من الطرائف والنوارد، المفعمة بروح النقد الاجتماعية والخلقي والأدبي والسياسي.
