لم يكن تاريخ الأكراد في فترة الخلافة الإسلامية (من القرن السابع حتى القرن الثالث عشر) موضوع بحث خاص في علم الاستشراق، خصوصاً وأنَّ المؤلفات المتوافرة تطرقت بشكل رئيس إلى مسائل التاريخ الحديث للأكراد، أما فترة العصور الوسطى ككل، فإنها حتى يومنا هذا، تعتبر في الواقع من الفترات التي لم تجرِ دراستها بشكل كاف. لذلك، نرى بأن محاولة البحث الخاص في تاريخ القبائل الكردية ومسألة أصلهم في العصور الوسطى استناداً إلى مصادر المؤلفين العرب تمتاز بأهمية كبرى، حيث أننا نطمح إلى سد الفراغ الناشئ في دراسة بعض قضايا تاريخ الأكراد، آخذين في الاعتبار المتطلبات الحديثة لعلم التاريخ ومعتمدين في الوقت نفسه على ما توصلنا إليه من مصادر عن تلك الفترة، مستقصين – بما وسعنا من جهد - المصادر العربية في القرون الوسطى، كالمؤلفات التاريخية والجغرافية وكتب السيرة وغيرها من المصادر بلغتها الأصلية.
