انصرف معظم المؤرخين العرب في المرحلة التاريخية المعاصرة في دراساتهم إلى إيضاح تاريخ البلاد العربية في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين الطافحين بأحداث الاستعمار الغربي وتغلغله في البلاد العربية والمشكلات المختلفة الناجمة عنه، إذ جذبهم بريق أحداث النهضة والتطورات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والفكرية، مهملين أو متناسين الجذور البعيدة لها، وبذلك كان تاريخ القرون السابقة غامضاً. حاولت في بحثي هذا أن أستجلي هذا الغموض وأن أسدَّ ثغرةً مهما كانت ضيقة. لقد وقع اختياري على هذا الموضوع لأسباب أهمها: 1 ـ إزالة الغبار عن دور الحجر والعمارة في بلاد الشام عموماً ومدينة حماه خصوصاً في التأريخ وفي هوية ذلك الحجر، وكيف أنه عامل نقد وتفاعل حضاري ايجابي مُبْدِعْ. 2 ـ الكشف عن الجذورة لهذه العمارة، والتي تغذَّت من تربة غنية توضعت في بلادنا منذ قرون مضت وهي ذات قيمة اجماعية واقتصادية وتاريخية وسياسية. 3 ـ إظهار تحول العمارة إلى مفهوم ثقافي وفكري.
