دمشق... الشام... جنّة الأرض بلا خلاف لحسن عمارة، ونضارة بقعة، وكثرة فاكهة، وكثرة مياه، قبل سميت دمشق لأنهم دمشقوا في بنائها، أي أسرعوا.
والشَّام: اسم بلاد سورية الطبيعيّة، أطلق على دمشق، لأنها قاعدتها وأجمل مدنها وأكبرها وأفضلها.
دمشق على ضفاف أنهارها يقيم شعب نشيط دائب على العمل، جدُّه أكثر من هزله، وشغله أكثر من تبطُّله، وإيمانه أكثر من شكّه، له ميل إلى التجارة معتزّ بماضيه، فخور بتقاليده، مرهف الحسّ، لطيف المعشر، سريع التكيف والموالفة، حَبَتَهُ الطبيعة ذكاءً فطريّاً، ميَال إلى الأدب والفصاحة مغرم بالألفاظ الرنانة والتراكيب الفخمة.
يعتقد كثيرون أن دمشق هي أقدم مدينة في العالم، ويدعوها بعض المستشرقين لؤلؤة محاطة بالزمرد الأخضر، كما جاء في موسوعة الكتاب المقدّس.
