الدراسات التاريخية الحديثة عن الأنباط لا تعني الدراسة اللغوية التي ركز هذا الكتاب عليها، وقد عقد مؤتمر بلاد الشام كثيراً من أوراقه حول هذا التاريخ، وأحسن الدكتور إحسان عباس عندما عمد إلى هذه الأوراق، واستخلص كتابه الثقافي الذي ألم فيه بالأنباط تاريخاً وديانة وأحوال معيشة.
ومن الدراسات التي انصبت على اللغة النبطية بمستوياتها المختلفة، الكتابية والصوتية والصرفية والنحوية والدلالية، ويوجد من هذه الدراسات كثير، والملاحظ على أغلبها أنها مدونات للنقوش أو قراءات لها، ولم أجد كتاباً في العربي أو غيرها يدرس النظم المختلفة للنبطية.
وقد جعلت دراستي هذه في أربعة أجزاء: الجزء الأول: وقد درست فيه الأصول التاريخية لصورة الحرف النبطي، إذ إن هذا الخط لم يكن خطاً مبتدعاً منهم، ولكنه كان جزءاً من سلسلة الخطوط السامية المعروفة لدينا حتى الآن.
أما الجزء الثاني: فقد جعلته لدراسة المستوى الصوتي، فدرست فيه الأصوات الصحيحة، والحركات وأشباه الحركات، والإبدال الصوتي الاتفاقي، وسقوط الأصوات، والتشديد، وبعض القضايا الوظيفية الأخرى، كالهمزة المقحمة وهاء السكت وهمزة الوصل. والجزء الثالث وقد جعلته للحديث عن النظام الصرفي في النبطية وتحدثت فيه عن أبنية الاسم والفعل والجنس والبنية العددية والمصادر المشتقات وغيرها.
وأما الجزء الرابع فقد أوردت فيه بعض المفردات النبطية، وجعلتها في فصل خاص، قارنتها بما يناظرها من الاستعمالات السامية، بالرجوع إلى المعاجم السامية المتاحة أو النقوش المتوافرة.
