على الرّغم من العناية الكبيرة التي لاقاها النَّحو العربيّ منذ وقت بعيد، إلا أنّ هذه العناية كانت منصبة على توضيح المذاهب النحوية، وتبيين تاريخ النحو الأول، ومراحل هذا النحو منذ القدم حتّى أيامنا هذه وقد أفلحت الدراسات في الكشف عن وجوه تاريخ النحو في أغلب فتراته، وأما دراسة المصطلح النحويّ، فقد ظلت بكرا إلى عهد قريب، على الرّغم من أن أكثر العلوم قد جُمِعَت مصطلحاتُها ودوِّنت منذ أمد بعيد، والسبب في هذا يعود إلى صعوبة تتبّع المصطلح النّحوي عند عدد كبير من النحوييّن الأفذاذ منذ أيّام أبي الأسود الدؤلي حتى أيّامنا هذه، سواء عند النحويين البصريين أو عند النحويين الكوفيين، وهذه الصعوبةُ ناشِئةٌ أيضاً من كثرة هذه المصطلحات وإختلافها بين طائفة وأخرى، ولذا، فقد ظل هذا المصطلح بعيداً عن أيدي الدارسين إلا قليلاً.
وقد أطلعت على بعض الدراسات التي تبحث في المصطلح النحوي وهي نوعان: نوع منها مقالات أو إشارات أو حدود، فبعض هذه الإشارات تجدها في بعض الكتب التي تعالج النحو البصريّ أو الكوفي كما نجد في كتاب "سيبويه إمام النحاة" للمرحوم علي النجدي ناصف، او كتاب المدارس النحوية لــ "شوقي ضيف" وربما نجد بعض هذه الإشارات في مقدمة بعض الكتب النحوية المحققة، ولكن للمحقق لا للمؤلف كما نجد في كتاب المقتضب للمبرد الذي حققه المرحوم محمد عبد الخالق عضيمة.
وأما الحدود فهي تعريفات للمصطلحات النحوية في كتب خصصت للمصطلحات العلمية مثل كتاب "كشاف إصطلاحات الفنون" للتّهانُوي، وكتاب (الكلِّيات) لأبي البقاء الكفوي، وكتاب (التعريفات) للشريف الجرجاني، ولكن هذه الكتب - على فضلها - لم تكن خالصة للمصطلح النحوي بعينه، وإنما كانت تعالج مصطلحات العلوم كافة، ولذا، فقد كان مؤلفوها يقتصرون على أشهر المصطلحات في الباب الذي يتحدثون عنه.
